HAS ANY-ONE EVER SEEN ANY ANY PLANS OR DRAWINGS OR SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT WOULD BE PART OF A CULTURAL QUARTER FOR CHURCH SQUARE? HAS THE COUNCIL ANY FIRM IDEAS OF WHAT IS TO BE BUILT AND WHO WILL FUND IT? ANY TIME SCALE EVER BEEN TALKED ABOUT? YET ANOTHER COUNCIL IDEA DOOMED TO FAILURE.

I can't believe local councils are still giving the go-ahead to these out of town developments - surely they realise what it will do to the city centre - not to mention encouraging more car use. Even in the US, where these out of town retail parks started out, many cities are realising the error of their ways and working to revitalise their city centres. Best of luck in your efforts to stop this backward, outdated scheme.

Hi Paul

Thank you for your question to the KSA Group. At this moment in time for legal reasons we are unable to comment on exactly what the claim is about. As soon as we are in a position to divulge any information to the public we will of course do so. We would like to thank you for your interest in KeepScunthorpeAlive.

Any danger of someone telling people exactly what the legal claim is all about? You seem to keeping it very close to your chest.

Whilst unreservedly supporting the Keep Scunthorpe Alive campaign, I feel that the organisation's profile could be raised somewhat. Had I not become keenly interested in the
opposition to the development, I would not have heard of it.
Now that you have achieved a reference back to the planning committee, it is important to have the support of as many local residents as possible.
My own view is that the land created by the demolition of the old leisure centre and multi-storey car park presents an ideal space for a development such as that proposed for the garden centre site, with the added advantage of being in the main trading centre, and near the bus station.
Good luck with the campaign.

I can not remember the town looking as busy as it does in pic 1 what year was this taken
picture 2 is more the norm even before M&S closed.
You have to remember that these big firms as you put it are the bread and butter of the council,
The new site for M&S on doncaster road will save the council god knows how many thousands of pound because as was with Tesco,
Tesco had to foot the bill for the road works and changes that was the agreement for being allowed to build there and i am sure M&S will have the same rules with any luck they will find a way to steer the football traffic in another direction that is the bain on our lives that live in the area not a retail park

Lets all be real, the town centre has been going down hill for alot of years, I moved to scunthorpe 16 yrs ago and I can see the change and it is not because M&S have moved out,
think about it astore like M&S do not leave a profitable area, TJ hughs, Peacocks and alot of other store just can not afford the cost of keeping open in town the rents and rates are telephone numbers, I was going to open a shop in town 4 years ago and I would have had to remortgage my home 6 times to be able to afford a years rent and rates and it was a small shop so what does it cost the larger stores.
The Trent Valley Garden Centre is a good place for M&S it will give the area much needed jobs and a selection of other retail outlets for people to visit. I only live 10 mins from Trent Valley and believe me it is so sad to see they way it is being run into the ground the whole experience of going shopping there is a waste of time I prefer to get transport to Brigg garden centre.
So lets take the rose coloured specs off and take a good look around town the indoor market that used to be full of stalls is now so empty as is Ashby market nothing to do with M&S

Size-wise, the empty T J Hughes store should suit M & S perfectly. It's bigger than their old store, and being on two floors lends itself well to food and clothing departments. The building is in excellent condition, with lifts and escalators. and opens onto a car park. What more could they need.
I feel quite sad every time I pass the empty shop!

I say that one shop and one developer should not be allowed to dictate how the town develops. If M&S are saying that it's either the proposed location or not at all, then in the interests of the entire town the answer should really be quite simple, Not at all.!

By saying “NO” the council can send out a very big message to other potential investors that they (the council) are focused on developing a prosperous and vibrant town centre and not just a selective Out Of Town retail park that can only be afforded by the big national chain stores. That way other big stores will be encouraged to invest within they town as they are reassured that they won't be dumped in favour of the Former.

A healthy and vibrant town is much more important than “yet another “ soulless and lifeless retail park that just sucks the life out of every town that they appear in.

I have been informed that the new Home Bargins store at Skippingdale will be more of a furniture based outlet and there are no intentions to close either the Scunthorpe or Ashby store.
